Veterinarians

Dr. Lesley Phillips graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine then completed a valuable one-year internship in animal medicine and surgery at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City. In 1986, following her internship, she joined the Animal Emergency and Referral Center (AERC) team and was selected for a three-year surgical residency at the University of Florida.

An experienced soft tissue and orthopedic surgeon, one of Dr. Phillips' areas of interest includes hepatic microvascular dysplasia (HMD). She has co-authored a chapter on HMD in the 2000 Edition of Current Veterinary Therapy XIII. At the AERC, intraoperative videofluoroscopy technique is used to visualize the blood supply to the liver when evaluating cases with possible HMD or macroscopic portosystemic shunts.

Dr. Phillips also enjoys laser surgery, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. Laser surgery procedures minimize bleeding, swelling and pain. Laser surgery is ideal for feline declaw procedures, ear masses/ablation, skin masses, lick granulomas and a variety of other surgical procedures. Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy enable doctors to obtain biopsies of the liver and lung (respectively) with minimally invasive techniques.

Aside from her professional duties at the AERC, Dr. Phillips enjoys hiking, crafts and spending time with her 2 yellow Labradors named Carmen and Julie, her parrot named Pippin and her macaw named Gator.

The Animal Emergency and Referral Center is a major center for veterinary referrals from all over the country. Dr. Phillips enjoys her work and finds the cases challenging and rewarding.
